Teeth Whitening Frequently Asked Questions

What is teeth whitening?

Teeth whitening is a treatment to remove stains and discolouration from your teeth. The outside surface of your teeth is made from enamel, which tends to discolour with age and also because of what we eat and drink. Enamel usually thins with age too, which can make the darker dentine within your teeth show through. Teeth whitening treatments help your teeth to look whiter, brighter and healthier.

What teeth whitening system do you use?

There are a number of professional teeth whitening systems available. Here at Holmes Chapel Dental Practice, we offer Opalescence at-home teeth whitening because this has been a leading system for several decades, has a proven track record and gives excellent results. You can read more about Opalescence here.

How does Opalescence teeth whitening work?

With Opalescence teeth whitening, you will be given a set of custom-made trays to fill with a whitening gel which is then worn at home. Depending on the product and its concentration, we will advise whether you need to wear the trays overnight or for specific periods during the day.

Why should I whiten my teeth?

There are many reasons why you might want to whiten your teeth – it could be to feel more confident about your smile or because you have a special occasion coming up; it might also be because you want to minimise the appearance of certain flaws.

According to one study by the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, 48% of us notice a person’s smile before any other feature when we meet someone for the first time. Other studies suggest whiter teeth are viewed as healthier, more attractive and a sign of good self-care and a successful lifestyle. This shows that your teeth are important for making a great first impression.

Will teeth whitening cause sensitivity?

Tooth sensitivity is a relatively common side effect of teeth whitening, although it is usually temporary and will subside at the end of your treatment. Opalescence whitening products include desensitising ingredients, such as potassium nitrate and fluoride, to help reduce any sensitivity and give you a comfortable teeth whitening experience. We can help you manage any sensitivity if it occurs.

How long does teeth whitening take?

In most individuals the process takes a few weeks. It will tend to vary however, depending on starting shade, how will the teeth respond, how often the trays are worn, and the level of whiteness you would like to achieve.

How long will the results last?

You should see the results of your teeth whitening treatment for many years. Eventually, you may need a top-up treatment, simply because factors such as diet, age, and even some medications can discolour your teeth over time. Top-up treatments are quick and effective.
